At present All PERSONS: Foreigners legal or illegal, citizen or resident can access public healthcare no question ask. Whether it be public hospitals or small public clinics. Example illegal Foreigners like Haitians can give birth in public hospital or an other example Canadians or Europeans with or without cedula can get a FLU vaccine at small public Clinics no question ask just your name.

Lately the New government announced its giving Basic Health insurance to around I think 2 million Dominicans that have no Health Insurance free with the government Health insurance Senasa. Then the New government announced at UN meeting that Haitians giving birth in public hospitals is overloading its Healthcare system ( or something to this nature).

Now I can not find the announcement on this government free Senasa insurance but from memory it mention something like you can use it in public Hospitals?

The question I bring up is in the future will public Hospitals/Clinics charge Senasa or its clients that have no insurance? Do you think this is the government intention to solve its public healthcare problems?

What about vacation for covid-19 do you think that the government will only vaccinate Dominicans/ legal residence only?
I see island wide vacation for covid-19 maybe be with international help, What do you think?

If you need to go to a public hospital you should not be here.
I could not agree more. If you cannot afford medical coverage from a private company here, you are living hand to mouth and destitute.

After becoming a citizen, I applied for Senasa even though I already have private insurance with Humano.

Senasa does more than just allow access to the less than high quality public hospitals. My wife used it for a free service for physical therapy where Humano required a co-pay.

Correct. Before letting any of us enter any public health-care facility, we'll be quickly purchasing tickets to the first flight to Europe... We can accept other things in here, but public healthcare is a no no...

That being said, my wife took our youngest to this physical therapy that was semi-public, but nothing more than playing with our kid was done there and we did need to pay the co-pay to Universal... Reason: he started speaking a bit late. No progress came out of that experience other than he was not afraid to spend a few minutes without his parents anymore in the playroom. But no progress whatsoever for what he went there for...

Interesting! I am also a citizen, and I still have Dominican private insurance (SIMAG) thru my ex-wife. I thought it was impossible to accumulate 2 Dominican insurances.
How did that work for you?
Thanks in advance for your insights!

Actually a good question. My wife is on our privately paid for plan. For the physical therapy at the local clinic in Sosua, which worked VERY well, she would have had a co-pay with the private insurance and it was FREE with SENASA. So far, that is all I know about it. I am not aware of any conflicts of having Senasa and private insurance together as of yet.

Jamao al Norte
I have been in horrid public hospitals. Having said that, the new little public hospital in Jamao is wonderful for simple problems or referrals. I have used it and I have a premium Universal insurance policy. The care you receive is typical of the kindness of Dominicans in campos, yet the nurses have training and are qualified. They and the hospital know their limits and do not hesitate, when necessary, to transfer patients to Moca or to give referrals.

Agree I do have Humano Plan Max I think the second of their best plan but I seen people pay a less copayment than I at Cedimat also better coverage with Senasa. Also I am not 100% sure but I think all Hospital and Clinics must accept Senasa and Senasa dictates the prices they can charge......

I agree as an expat living here I do not need public hospitals I have private insurance but unfortunately many average dominicans do use public hospital. Their services can only get better and not worst. Now with Senasa maybe this will help put money in the public system. With the new government cracking down on corruption may be the money going to the health system will end up in the right place.

I also used in the past the small public Clinics for minor things and was satisfied and would of paid with my private insurance but not possible for now.......

I will certainly take the vaccine but what concerns me is with the porous border how will Covid-19 be control without vaccinating all the island. Just like all the poorest country in africa will need it to control this virus worldwide!
