From today's Sosua News:

[h=5]In the local and national press appeared some reports that the image of Sos?a in the evenings is not quite the ideal tourist picture. But is there still something to do in Sos?a in the evening now during the low season? So we asked Biek to make an evening tour through the 1 mile strip of Sos?a. Around the aperitif, he reported, so between 6 and 9 PM, it is still fairly busy at the Rumba Bar. But also for bar El Flow there is a lot of interest at Friday night, probably because a bucket of beer (five bottles of beer in a bucket with ice) is offered for 300 Peso.[/h] [h=5]Special offer[/h]
[h=5]Pedro Clisante[/h] [h=5]The Bermuda Bar, Central bar and bar Plan B have their regular clientele. The bar / nightclub El Toro (formerly Latino) now has special beer offers with special prices. It is now therefore considerably busier in the evening than before. If the neighbors like that, the special beer offers, we do not know. In the weekends there are still many visitors from the USA who mainly visit the big bar of Willy. Yes, it is low season in Sos?a, but at night it is still party time in the Pedro Clisante.[/h]

Britannia also always has a steady flow of it's base clientele and across the street at Coach's Corner as well. Britannia is for sale by the way (though there is no sign out front) as are the string of businesses across the street from the small salon to Burrito Hut. Hopefully whenever the new owner takes over Britannia he will keep it going as-is. Not much needs to change there IMO. Winner's Circle also draws decent crowds later at night, especially for such a small place. Particularly Friday and Saturday but sometimes mid-week too. That is more for the Hip-Hop enthusiasts.

The price of beer at Toro's had gone up to 70.00. Still a very good deal. At least he's not loosing money on it any more.

Anyone know how much the bars actually pay for the beer they sell? I was in StoDgo recently visiting some folks and went to Mercado Pola and they had six packs of Presidente for RD $180. So that is $30 per bottle. I assume they are making profit so I assume they are paying $20 - $25 per bottle. Obviously you get better deals when you buy in bulk but some of the bars do buy in bulk straight from the distributor. So don't they probably pay the same $20 - $25 per bottle. Maybe a little extra for shipping. Seems like you can still make good profit selling at $50. But I'm not an expert on any of this so I'm just asking if anybody knows.

i read that as cooch corner and wiener circle. i need to read less threads about hos and sosua :(

beer price: bars buy directly from distributors and in bulk. so cheaper than the price off the delivery truck...

Yes it was Presidente. Even had the wife look too. She suggested buying a bunch for the house, but I didn't want to haul it back on Caribe Tour. The folks we were visiting said it is not unusual. Even with 16% tax that would still be dirt cheap in comparison. So with the tax figure $35 then maybe Sosua would pay extra for further shipping distances, but I assume that wouldn't be much per bottle. I'm still thinking under $40 in my mind so $50 seems high to me but it is what it is.

we pay 50 pesos from Presidente for a regular size one...doesn't matter how much we order. Maybe, the big bars who order 300 cases/week get a break, but I can guarantee you that none of us regulars get a deal. We may get the odd bottle opener or a six pack of glasses if we are lucky. Some bars got new chairs and tables...which we said no too. We are not in business to advertise for Presidente or any other beer company.

Not bars, mind you..... just corner stores

Maybe one of the reasons small bar restaurant don't turn a profit is they over pay for beer.If an individual pays 41cents a bottle and a restaurant/bar owner pays 50cents per bottle there's a problem with the business model.

As a former barkeep I know from experience that youre lucky to turn US$20 profit per case of beer.

If your monthly overhead is US$400, you need to shift a lot of beer just to cover that. NOT easy low-season.

We now sell home-made ice cream & pies/pasties from home ...

Most people do not have a clue how many beers you need to sell just pay for one single monthly employee wage.

Most people don't have a clue how many beers you need to sell to pay a monthly $110,000 peso electricity bill.

Most people don't have a clue how many beers you need to sell a moth in order to pay double pay for the month of December to all of your employees. It's the Law.

Most people don't have a clue how many beers you need to sell in order to pay for all the employees monthly insurance. It's the law.

Most people do not have a clue how many beers you need to sell just to fill a 50 gallon Diesel generator up every month.

I could go on for pages and pages here...the list really is infinite.

Let's face it...most people don't have a clue whatsoever about running a business here in the DR, and that's why so many go under, change names, change ownership, get sold, get repossessed, and always have a for sale sign on them. A few people--like Seamonkey & ffritz and a few others here--have a clue about how many beers you need to sell a month just to maintain a girlfriend and her hair-do, her finger nails and Bikini waxing, her cell phone and cell phone minutes. It's a expensive.Trust me!

As a rule of thumb, we generally figured that whatever your monthly fixed costs are - rent, electric, gas, wages - you need to take weekly to break even.

e.g.
Overhead = RD30,000 per month
Takings RD30,000 per week

That's just to break-even though, before ANYTHING for the owner!
