STI & SDQ SAFETY TIPS FOR TOURISTs

Due to the recent tragedy event of a young American child being killed coming out of STI airport on the main highway that leads in and out of the STI airport I feel like some safety tips as far as “coming out of any DR airports” will make a good topic :

Here a few safety tips for anyone arriving at any Dominican airports :

1- Número uno , trust NOBODY

2- Do Not get in a taxi unless it’s has “ ministerio de turismo sign” on it’s door only airport cabs will have those signs

3- DO NOT wear JEWERLY at the airport

4- if possible take a picture of the taxis plates and the taxi driver prior to getting in

5 - DO NOT TRUST NOBODY

6- DO NOT bring your LV or FENDi suitcases ; being the cheap suitcases

7- leave the ROLEX OR CARTIER watch inside your pant pockets till you get home or hotel

8- and finally IF you forget everything here , then do not forget this …. DO NOT TRUST NOBODY

Here are my tips for tourists ..just relax and take the same precautions as you would in New York or London or Bangkok or Paris or Milan ..It is just as safe as those places except for one important difference . The driving is so unpredictable here that you must keep your eyes peeled all the time. cars and bikes come from everywhere !! the moto here seems to be..Live For The Moment...

I am WAY under the radar. No jewelry and my luggage has duct tape and JB Weld.

The ninis arrested are Luis Ángel Vargas Brito, 18 years old; Derlin Javier Mercado Martinez, Cesar Junior Ulloa Cuevas;
José Manuel Almonte Santana (Buki), 20 years old, and Elian Martínez Sánchez (Odalis), 22, all residents of the Cienfuegos sector

Unfortunately ...New York has imported alot of these drivers now.....they believe the traffic lights are only Christmas Decorations...and why would anyone on a motorbike wear a helmet ...Luckily for us ...they will meet the fate they deserve...I just hope they dont kill an innocent person first

Never go directly to where you are staying. Always stop to have a meal or put money on the phone chip or something like that.

Robberies do not have the happen in the moment in order to profile to you to be a target.
If you are not traveling heavy it my pay if you are unsure of your transport to be dropped off somewhere close to you destination.
That is if you feel safe moving the remaining part of the trip on foot.

Best way to protect yourself from being robbed or followed is to vet the individual transporting you (if possible).

Whenever I arrive back here to Santiago/ STI airport, I walk directly outside the main gate and hop in a publico.
Even the tigres know you don't mess with the syndicates on these roads. The PA takes me straight into the center of town for 100 pesos.
Eliminates having deal with overpriced taxis and highway robberies.
Always dress down when visiting this country regardless of which airport you fly into because your need to ball/ impress others can easily lead to your demise. I also recommend arriving during the daylight hours when possible.

In case it's not obvious, this was supposed to be a robbery. Shots were fired trying to get them to pull over while driving.

Same here. I had to pay the rest of our car in Moca yesterday (my wife arrived two weeks before me and paid the 50%), no way I tell the agency what exact day and hour we would go.
By the way… what a Mess the road Jamao-Cumbre-Moca is now, horrible.

My 2 tips:
1. If you are using a moto, get them to drop you off near your home but not AT your home.
2. I noticed that Dominican women go walking and running in a group. As nice as it might be to take a peaceful walk alone, it's much much safer to join a group and go together.
Edit: just noticed this thread is for tips leaving the airport; mine are general safety tips
