Has anyone flown with Sunwing from Toronto to Puerto Plata? Good/Bad? How strict was the luggage counter on weight?

A recent experience with Sunwing-

Just as a comparison I flew with Sunwing last year to Panama City and I will probably look for other options when I go to Panama again. They are inflexible.

The maximum weight allowed was 2 pieces and a total of 20KG which is very limited depending on the purpose of your visit. On the way to Panama City my luggage weighed 20KG. Therefore on the way back I knew I would be over. Flying back home I was 5KG over and I was charged $9.00USD per KG thus $45.00USD total. In addition to the weight restrictions the airport procedure for Sunwing in Panama City was horrible. Very slow and they manually checked (wrote up the baggage tags) for a full plane of passengers. This is the downside when you fly with some charters, lower fares but poor service.

Hopefully someone will comment on Sunwing to the DR as I usually fly direct to SD non-charter flight. However, I am sure the weight restrictions will be the same.

HI

I have flown Sunwing several times into Puerto Plata. In April we flew out of terminal 1. It was the best check in I have ever had. The flight was great, left on time and was smooth flying, service was good. The baggage allowance was 20kg for checked bags. They are usually pretty strict. Sometimes they have weighed mine and my friends together as some are lighter than others and just divided the weight. Carry- on is 5kg. Mine was heavier but I had no problem. Unfortunately all charter flights have these restrictions.

If you want the best options re weight restrictions, fly on WestJet - a friend of ours who takes tons to his family every year told us it is about about 3x what the other charters allow. They now fly direct to the DR and their prices are about the same as any of the charters.
