Heading to Cabarete in March. I've heard there is good surf (for all levels-I'm not a beginner but not great either!) at Encuentro...is this within walking distance for a couple of young girls, or is there public transportation to get there?

Also, I've read there is no sand bottom. Is this true? I'm wondering whether to get a pair of booties (I've only got 5mil winter booties)

Any other surf-related advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks! :)

I think this info will help you out:

Encuentro does have very good winter surf - best in the early morning
before 11am.

It is too far to walk to from Cabarete - so you have a couple options -
you can catch a gua-gua and get out where the dirt road goes back to
the beach from the highway (there is a small white surfing sign) and walk
down to the beach, it's about a 10/15 min walk from the highway.

Or catch a cab to take you there

Or hook up with some of the local surfers for a ride with them.

And yes the beach is "ironshore" so you might want to use booties or surf
shoes to avoid cutting your feet.

There are several rental places there for boards - the best seems to be
the last one down the side road to the beachfront.

ain't too bad for a sunrise either !! :smoke:
