There was a very good place across from Banco Popular in Sosua. I understand that the Chef, Dominican and well trained in Japanese cuisine, has left to start his own place. Across more or less from the small Playero. Not sure of the name.

Someone more in the know will hopefully provide the new name and more precise location. No doubt one could find it easily if at the intersection of Alejo Martinez and Pedro Clisante.

In Cabarete there is Yamazoto. Above average and decent and large menu.

Is there good sushi in Sosua? Cabarete? I'm used to really good, authentic sushi and just can't imagine it.

It's not like it's spaghetti bolognese or pizza with corn on it LOL

I could not overcome the urine vomit smell inside. We ate outside. Had rainbow runner sashimi..the quality of the fish was good, it was just tasteless.

Had a hand roll that I threw out. It was too packed and seemed soggy.

The miso was okay. The edamame was edamame. I had a roll that was okay. The service was okay.

Not going back but a buddy swears by the chicken fried rice. Chinos fried rice is excellent so.....

Which place are you talking about ?

I'm friends with the owner of Yamazoto, and it is good, but hands down the best sushi on the north coast is La Mesa Taina in the Extreme Hotel on Kite Beach. They have their own fishing boat (occasionally they bring in their own tuna), they have more volume than any other sushi place (and that means fresher fish) and where else do you find a Dominican sushi chef who trained in Japan?

Definitively Yamazato at Cabarete. Quality is comparable as you will find in NYC as well as the price.

I had no idea on La Mesa Taina at Extreme Hotel. I will have to consider that option next time. And so close for me.

Same here! I have tried numerous Sushi spots in my years living here but not one would I recommend. I have a Japanese friend in Santiago who says, Samurai in the capital is the real thing.
My son and his wife have some rolls delivered (in the capital) that are ok, but I like Sashimi and am still searching.

I ate at Yamazato once and was not impressed. It was similar in quality to most lower end AYCE sushi places so not terrible but nothing worth repeating or recommending.

I'm curious then why you did recommend it 2 days ago in post #2 in this thread?

You guys made me hungry for good sushi so I felt compelled to seek some out. It was worth every penny, made to order by an experienced full sushi chef of Japanese training, apprenticeship and origin. Now if we could just source some proper wasabe that's not an arm and a leg. :D

Hey Earl, the chef you refer to above, was he / are you in the DR?

I'm afraid not. Private family affair. My little cousin's husband has 20+ years in as a high end chef. He offered to show off a little if we all split the cost of the food. Well worth the cost and the food was unbelievable. I could not, would not, afford this in Japan.
