Hey I'm new here, and I'm going to DR in January for my first time ever.
I'm wondering which the best aircompany would be for me.
I only need the tickets, no charterhotel etc.

I've heard that KLM is supposed to be good and that it's better to go STHLM-Amsterdam-SD, rather than STHLM-Madrid-SD, any truth in this?

Also, how early should I order the ticket if I wanna go in January, should I order it ASAP since I will go there the first week in January and a lot of ppl might be travelling around that time? :ermm:

Hi, I am from Sweden, but live in Puerto Plata.
I travel a few times a year and use
1) If possible charter to/from Puerto Plata. Check Apollo, Ving or Fritidsresor.
It is the cheapest way, and then you take the bus, CaribeTours from here to Santo Domingo.
2) MartinAir. ( That is KLM to Amsterdam and then further with MartinAir ).

As it is January, check options with the charters, depending on your length of stay.
I have also flewn Air France on a few occations.

On KLM's website I could only order tickets from SHTLM - Puerto Plata , or Punta Cana, and when I tried Santo Domingo it said that I couldn't order tickets to SD online. Soo I guess I have to call them about that? Weird..

Anyways, taking a bus from Puerto Plata to SD seems scary and my Dominican girlfriend is supposed to pick me up from the airport.

Taking the bus is easy, and relatively safe and comfortable. It takes about 4 1/2 hours and makes a few stops.

I would find a travel agency and book flight via Santo Domingo, the last thing you wanna do after flying for 12hrs is sit on a bus for another 5hrs. However, the bus ride is air conditioned and comfortable.

Absolutely. Check out Iberia and Air france. IB goes daily to SDQ, AF 3xweek. Look for special deals since the least costly internet fares will set you back 6000 to 8000 kroner. KLM and Martinair via AMS might be marginably cheaper but with an unfavourable schedule.

Yeah I found cheap tickets for 6600 kronors with Iberia. It will land in Madrid before going to Santo Domingo and the whole trip will take 14 hours.

I also called KLM (MartinAir) and asked why they didn't fly to Santo Domingo and all they said was that it wasn't in their computer system, soo that's kinda weird considering they fly to Punta Cana and Puerto Plata.

But it seems that Iberia is the best option for me and that's what I'm gonna take.

Thanks for all the help :classic:

BTW, does anyone know how the airport in Madrid is? I think it's named "Barajas"

I've heard it's a bit of chaotic :ermm:

Barajas it is and well managed these days. Sure you had Roissy-De gaulle in mind, now that is a bazaar!

www.incatours.se

hope it helps.

The link incatours.se is "dead" at the moment.

Anyway, one option that I've taken three times over the last three years is to fly Ryanair to London Stansted and Thomson charter from Gatwick to Puerto Plata. Of course it involves one overnight stay in London and a bunch of bus and/or train rides between those London airports. But it is dirt cheap, even counting those extra expenses.

Taxi POP to Caribe tours terminal 12$

OK, sorry if I made you do all that research to no avail. But at least in the summer season it is an option, when regular air fares are around USD 1,500 round trip from Scandinavia. (I paid like USD 850/NOK 5,400 pp last summer, for each of the three of us).

Our house is located only 70 min drive from POP, though. My brother-in-law always comes and picks us up (although he lets me drive back to the house).

Also, I personally consider the stopover in London as a bonus, being the Anglophile that I am :))
