I'm curious-- I know that there are threads on this but where or how did this start?

In NYC everyone calls The Dominican Republic --the DR. It is not a NY thing to call it the Dominican.

One of the threads last week had a newspaper article from Ottowa. The journalist called the DR the Dominican. Is it a Canadian phrase?

Before this forum I never heard it. Now, it's like nails on a chalkboard for me.

Any ideas? How long has it been being said? Is it relatively new?

Wrong! you don't say "we are going to the Dominican". The correct form is "we are going to Dominicana". Get it!!!

Forget it!!! I know there are a lot of threads--. I've never seen anyone state where it came from. Last week was the first time I saw it in print ( canadian) used and I was wondering if that's where it started!

'The Dominican' and the 'skankies'

.... The journalist called the DR the Dominican...

Slurry journalism indeed.
Hopping on a fad that 's utterly stupid is a shame for her.

To my email Ms/Mrs. A.M. McQueen replied:
"Well up here it is quite common to refer to Dominican Republic as "The Dominican" or "The DR" after a first proper reference. And though I am aware they are called sankies, after sanky panky, everyone where I was called them skankies. Since I opened the story with my anecdote, that's what I called them."

Well, wrong twice I'd say.... :pirate:

I don't think it has anything to do with being a canadian thing, people from other countries can't be expected to get everything correct.
Kinda like calling Ottawa..Ottowa;)

How do you explain usage of the term "The Dominican" by Dominican's born in The DR living in NYC? On several occasions I have caught employees in my building using the term, they barely speak English and have been here for 5-10 years, I just laughed.

Stop being so anal 2LeftFeet!

tambo' yawns

PS: I also saw the taboo term used in The New York Times a few months back!

I first heard it from an English tourist who was staying at an AI, well before my days on DR1. She alternated between calling it "Dominica" and "the Dominican" so you'll forgive me for associating it with ignorance and cluelessness.:tired:

So, I guess at this point since maybe it's become come the norm- Dominicans say it, Canadians say it--OttAwans :), NY'ers say it (so I'm told) and the English--- It should be accepted!!!--- Everyone including myself who it bothers ---is being too damn sensitive--

It's just going to be like ain't-- it's now part of the language and there is nothing that can be done about it! - It's a losing battle!

God-- it makes me nuts though!!! Just like typos--:)

Maybe our moderators can get spell check installed on this forum!

!
Not if you want English to continue to be a language, it shouldn't.
If you did, then it will also be acceptable to say, "I axed him a question".
The correct word is "asked" and it doesn't matter how many fools say it, it still isn't correct.
Some football commentators talk about "good defensing".
It's highly unlikely that the players are pulling fence posts out of the ground, during a game.
Defending is the correct word and again, it does not matter how many times these uneducated idiots say it wrong, it's still incorrect and we who are able to speak the language should teach the others how to speak.
You are not doing anyone a favour by letting them repeat their mistakes.
It took me much longer to learn Spanish than it should have, as the Dominicans would not correct my mistakes, and my errors would get imprinted in my brain, and when I would finally find out the correct way to say a term or sentence, it would be 10 times harder to break the habit than to have learned it right from the beginning.
If people feel that it is important to communicate, then they should speak properly, otherwise, you'll always have fools axing if it's correct to say, "I was in the Dominican" and there will no way of defensing proper speech.

You guys really need to relax! You do make a lot of sense and of course are correct about the use of the word Dominican but..... as an every day reader of the message board... it bugs me more to know that EVERY time some one writes the Dominican referring to the country it is SURE to be followed up with a correction and an insult by someone. Please guys, The people calling the DR the Dominican are not stupid or idiots. In the scheme of the important things in life, how important can it be to you to correct and insult new people coming to learn on the message board?

It is important to correct them, before the error becomes habitual. (see post above yours for detailed explanation)
As for insulting people, I have no idea why you would think that some folks find it important to insult new people.
That's an absurd thought.
If there were a member who felt and acted that way, he would get weeded out.

You got a point there Rocky! I guess what I was trying to say is we can try to change it but it appears to be so wide spread that maybe we all --- including myself shouldn't get so upset. We can try to educate but people are still going to call it that.

Maybe the reason why it started was as simple as 10 years ago it was printed wrong in a newspaper ...somewhere... and it stuck. And now it just stayed.

Like the word Sankie--someone started a new thread yesterday with a new twist to the definition. It was interesting.

Calling the Dominican Republic, the Dominican is wrong because it's not the country's name. We are called USA, America, or the States and those names are accepted and widely used. I wouldn't want to be called the United. Calling a country by a different name in my opinion is rude and disrepectful and that is wrong.

I guess nobody remembers how long this has been said. Has it been said for 20 or the past 10 years? or it's been said for so long nobody remembers.

That's a good question.
I don't remember when it started, but it seems more recent than old.
Someone like Hillbilly would probably know, as he's lived here since the days of Columbus.

When the island was Hispanola??? --that's an idea Hispanola1.com---that would avoid the Dominican issue all together. jajajaj-- it would start a new problem but it wouldn't be the old one!
