Today I bought a jumbo pack of Pampers & a big tin of Similac formula for a friend, who is desperate, and humbled herself to ask for help.
The father of the 3-month old boy blocked her number and after a couple of $50 payments no longer will help with the support of the infant.
They were together for about a year before the birth.

But this is not the only Dominican mother I know in this condition. I know 3 others, all of whom receive no support and the fathers want nothing to do with their children. They were just hit & run sperm donors. I know this is incredibly common here, becuase I know very few Dominicans.
I would guess it's more than half the fathers that do not help support their offspring.
Yes the mother can get a court order but the fathers ignore it and nothing happens to them. And many of these children get dumped on the grandmother.

Due to this seemingly rate of absentee fathers their is no doubt why the DR seems to be in such a sad state of education, family cohesion with high prostitution and drug & alcohol abuse.
This is very similar to the broken family units in the Northern US ghettos created by The Great Society, like Chicago, Baltimore and Detroit that are awash with illegitimate births, drugs and violence,
Yes their are some great DR families, but my guess most of those are where both parents had some better education, which definitely is not the majority.

Probably a stupid question, but is there court enforced child support here?

Yes. I know of a couple Dominican women who have gone to court and gotten it. They usually don't get much - maybe 5000/mo.
There doesn't seem to be much enforcement and apparently it is quite easy to hide assets/income. If they have a unit for strict enforcement, like they have for domestic violence across the country with data shared, that might help.

Then there are other factors which are too sensitive, so I won't go into them. I know someone who abandoned studies when they got pregnant and is working as a secretary rather than having a career in financial services (and a degree). There are quite a few bright careers stopped and lives changed before they can begin, quite sad.

My friend did receive a judgment for support. Yes it was something like 5000 pesos and the father paid the full amount one time. The 2nd month he was late and gave her partial payment and sent some diapers with his mother. After that 'poof' she doesn't hear from him or receive anything.

Her attitude doesn't help because she's angry and let's you know about it, but she feels it's a waste to go back to Court.

Probably if the father wasn't deadbeat and had a job the court would demand he pay more?

Funny how different folks can have completely different experiences. I know many Dominicans and Dominican families. I don't know any girls or women with this type of problem. I'm not saying that this type of issue does not exist, as we have all heard the stories over the years. I find it curious that 2 guys who live about two miles apart, can enjoy such different Dominican Republics.

You don't know one Dominican woman who got pregnant and the father (but not really a father) has nothing to do with the woman or baby ? Maybe because you know 'families'. I am talking about the men who don't want any part of "Family".

I thought I would be kind one warm day and gave a ride to a cop who was hitching a ride on the Panoramica Highway to the Grand Parada. He proceeded to tell me he was very proud that he was a father of 9 children with 5 different women. He seemed to think that made him a stud. I couldn't wait to get him out of my car.

I find that entirely impossible to believe you don't know 'any' because being on the North Coast they are more than abundant. I know 4 just in my neighborhood and it is small and by no means a barrio

I know a mother of two who went to the court six or seven years ago and was awarded the whopping sum of 3000 pesos per month. Yes, 3000 total. And I'm pretty sure the father hasn't paid that amount more than 5 times since then. And I also know several fathers who do their best to support their children. It's the ones that don't seem to try that make me angry.

My experience is similar to Chico Bill's. Many girls here say the father has just disappeared so no court order will help them to get the money that is due to them. That is one reason why many girls end up selling their bodies here.

If a man does not pay child support, the court system will put him in jail.
But the woman has to follow up on it and show proof.

I think a lot of people here would be surprised at how many of these single mothers still get visits from the absentee dad when he gets the urge.
These girls "fall in love" and still entertain "dad" even though he's a deadbeat.
I've seen it happen more times than I can count.

There are other options for these women but sadly religion and old men get to control those options.

It’s Dominican culture indeed. I guess many women also don’t find the way to court or expect anything from it.
My OH gave her ex a nickname, something like “salary will come soon”. Because it was always promised and never came, it became a running gag.

OR in future be a little more selective on who is going to share your bed
