Advances are underway for a new airport in Pedernales to serve the three resorts under advanced construction by the Fideicomiso Pro Pedernales, a public-private trust, and that will be operated by international chains. Presidential Minister Jose Ignacio Paliza recently announced the new airport will be built in Oviedo, in the province of Pedernales. As reported, the advances are being made on the construction of the runway.

Already, nearby Cabo Rojo Port receives thousands of cruise passengers, while the builders advance on the construction of the large resorts in the nearby beach area.

A 7800 ft runway is nothing to laugh at.

I still don't get it though.... The drive from Oviedo to Cabo Rojo is still at best an hour ride to get to what?..., Cabo Rojo beach which is nice but really nothing special. The real beach is Bahia de Las Aguilas but the hotels won't be on it. Hotel guest will still need to travel to the national park, take the boat ride (or I assume a future hotel shuttle etc.) just to get to there. All that and there's nothing to do outside the Cabo Rojo area (what are tourists really going to do on a day trip to Pedernales [the city]? Cross the Frontera??!! Yikes! :-o
And the cruise port... how many ships so far? Maybe 5 and the reviews on the cruise blogs and boards are that visits to Cabo Rojo are just 'ok' at best and nothing close to Amber Cove or Taino Bay in POP.
Hope this works out with all the money being spent as well as all the environment/landscape changes going on. Hopefully not concrete shells in 10 years...

Santiago De Los Caballeros
They can do glamping at Bahia de Las Aguilas
Glamping

Go to the Hoyo de Pelempito

Explore our "Dominican Grand Canyon"

Drive east to visit Laguna de Oviedo

Hiking at la Sierra de Bahoruco

Like, if I had the time, I'd spend at least 2 weeks in that area. It's one of the most beautiful in the whole island.

People might get surprised of all the things you can do in Pedernales. And They still mention that's "there's nothing to do there" because it's "empty".
