Do Dominicans use the term 'blondie' for anything else other than people with blonde hair? And is this term commonly used?

I know 'rubia' is similar in Spanish...just wondered about the actual use of 'blondie' aswell.

Thanks

what about eye colour?

Yeah I thought that was used.

But is 'blondie' not used to describe certain eye clours aswell? Just an observation.

hmmm....

I overheard a conversation that said something like 'blondie' is used as term for people with blue or green eyes as well as people with blonde hair. Just wanted to know if it is true...and also if I heard correctly. It serves me right for listening in to other conversations if it is wrong!

They also say it to very dark people as a joke, in a sense of contrast. Especially if the person is dark but has reddish/yellowish hair.

..you should leave the AIs more often.

the OP is confused. he/she is asking this question because he/she has only been to All Inclusive hotels and that's what the sankie call the tourists, blondie, a word they learned from the tourists as well. :bored: :bored: :bored:

and "regular Dominicans" will call almost anyone with light hair and light eyes rubia/rubio. of course not everyone does that, there's lots of blondes in my family and we don't call eachother Rubio/Rubia.:surprised

... and to me it seems is used for a brunette as well.
If a girl does not have a destinctive Latina look, she runs a good chance of being called 'rubia'.

m'frog

I agree, in Dominican Republic they will call anyone Rubio/Rubia and I mean anyone , just because their hair is a little light brown, not necessarily a true blond color, even if the person has light eyes, My husband hair color is dark brown and they call him Rubio, I don't understand why. because as far am I concerned its far from blond to me.

That was my experience on my very first trip back in 88 the resort worker's calling people with lighter hair, hey blondie this and hey blondie that. It was nauseating.

I've never heard it used outside of a resort except for the term rubio/rubia ;)

Usually Dominicans will call ANYONE with light skin "rubia" or "rubio"... they don't necessarily have to have blonde hair or light eyes.

yes true, that's what we've saying but the english word "blondie" its only used in the resorts, and its understandable why they use it.

dominicans will call anyone rubia/rubio, it's like "hey, you". that i am being called rubia is understandable, but miniovio calls his best friend (very dark moreno) "rubio", and his girlfriend (standard dominican) "rubia".
also i hear vendors being called rubio/rubia, even if they are black....
funny enough no dominican will refer to him/her self as rubio/rubia....

He probably calls his girlfriend rubia because they are together. El rubio y la rubia. LOL

We call my aunt rubia because she is really a rubia. My other aunt after her came out with the same light skinned complexion but with dark hair and they called her la morena. My aunt that was born after her came out trigue?a with brown hair. She always says I wonder what they were going to call me. La negrita??? LOL

Thanks for you help everyone, its cleared things up a bit for me.

And M.A.R, I have been outside AI resorts, in fact I spend most of my time out of the complex. It was a mere question...sorry if my knowledge of the DR and the Spanish language arent perfect yet. I am trying to learn and so I ask questions.

I only made this mistake once, but I had a dominicana who did work for us, who had decided to bleach her very dark hair over the weekend. She came into our offices on a Monday morning with bright orange hair (about the color of Bozo the Clown's hair) and I stupidly said "naranja???" to which she replied very indignantly "aye Carlos, NOOOOOoooo........ RUBIA! RUBIA!"
