thinking about Monte Cristi

We haven't explored this area of the DR and we're planning to drive from either Santo Domingo or from Las Terrenas to get there. Drive-time is about the same, 5 hours.

Does anybody have any words of wisdom or advice? I think all the bridges that were damaged from the rainfall have been repaired.

We will probably stop by Punta Rucia first, then to Monte Cristi. (There's a lodge in PR that was highly recommend by some Frenchie friends of ours)

Think about it again. Go there only if you have been to all other places on the island already.

If travelling by highway #5, you can expect at least a 5 hour trip from Las Terrenas to Punta Rucia.

We took a trip there with my brother-in-law and his wife about 8-10 years ago. Spent overnight at Punta Rucia (eat at Elsa’s on the beach), then on to montectisti. We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite in a hotel on the water, don’t remember the name. Not much to see or do, wouldn’t go back, but glad we went once.

Boring is a state of mind. Punta Rucia is worth going to for the sand (Cayo Arena"), mangroves, and fish dinners.

I've never been but it looks intriguing as you pass by on the way to Dajabon. It's a borderline bucket list visit.

I've toured the entire country on my motorcycle. Montecristi was a mistake. The highway to get there has speedbumps the entire way and made the trip awful. Once you are there, it's time to turn around because there is nothing to see, except for that one mountain. I found it extremely hot as well. It's a long way for nothing.

Yes, agreed, and we found a restaurant on the main street that was really nice and the food was excellent. We went because none of us had been there before, and their great-great-great grandparents came from there (Guayubin) before relocating to Santiago. Nice to see El Morro in person.

Totally agree and the beaches are awesome!
Not a croc wearing tourist in sight. Btw, Michael Crummey, one of our local Newfoundland writers, just won the Dublin Literary Award for his novel The Adversary. $100,000 Euros. That will buy a few pints of Guinness! 😂

The parc in Monte Cristi has a clock gifted/built by Gustav Eiffel ---- if my memory serves me right. And if one is into that kind of thing.

How was the beach access road, Bob? Donkey ride, dirt road, or paved?

I know Buen Hombre for kiting, which is just before Monte Christi coming from Cabarete.Beautiful beaches, really untouched. Same beach and beautiful water as the video posted by @bob saunders. However, very dry area, so people are getting water delivered, and in some hotels, it`s a bit restricted. The number of hotels, restaurants is very limited.
In the 3 years that I have been in Buen Hombre to kite on flat water, I have not seen too much progress, but I love kiting there!
