The Venezuelan but living in Miami Oscar Alejandro visited the DR and was given a tour by William Ramos (Dominican from Jarabacoa). Well, since he was already on the islnd, they went to Cap Haitian for a few days to see Haiti. In this episode (all episodes are in Spanish) he tours what the Haitian guide said is the only supermarket in Cap Haitian. He claims is mostly for the rich and tourists.
Some things that were telling of this place was.
- The size, he mentions on several occasions that the place is rather small.
- The products, most are imported from France. It's noticeable the lack of Dominican products, though they do show one apple cider from the DR. This is somewhat bothersome, because if the place was full of Haitian products then a protectionist attitude from Haitian authorities would be justified towards Dominican products. However, most products are imported from France on the other side of the world when the DR is "right there" with factories in Santiago and SD producing all sorts of products for Dominican brands. It simply doesn't make sense there are hardly any Dominican products there given its mostly imported and for things such as milk and such.
- They do show some Haitian products such as the Barbancourt rum and Haitian coffee.
- The prices of some things are quite high.
- He also mentions the place didn't have many customers, though that could be due to the time and day.
- At a certain point he had to stop filming because several customers demanded him to stop on the basis that was he was doing was suspicious. They literally thought he was a spy. At one point a woman is skimming through his cellphone to see what he is about. lol Afterwards when it was clear he was simply a Youtuber, some of the customers helped him in identifying several products.
Then they went to see where most people buy their groceries and it turns out Cap Haitian has many open air markets and small colmado store types where almost all groceries are sold. Due to advice from the Haitian guide, they were not allowed to film in the open air market for their safety. Whatever was filmned was done through the vehicle windows.
Then they show their journey to the border since that too was their last day in Haiti.
