Tragedies in Samana and Bonao; children die in traffic accidents

Several children were impacted when a large truck collided into another and sent the truck into the playground of a public school on the Sanchez to Samana road. As reported, several children died when the truck crashed the Las Garitas public school, Escuela Obdulia Rodríguez. The accident occurred when a truck driver lost control and impacted the school on Tuesday, 11 April 2023.

Hoy newspaper reported that the two deceased children were identified as Nahiolett Michel de la Cruz and Nayelis Diaz Andujar, both four years old. The injured are Angel Mendez, 42, Dariel Bueno, 28, and Nicover Lina, 14, from Samaná, Mabel de la Cruz, 25, from San Francisco de Macoris, Duarte province, as well as a three-year old, resident of Nagua, Maria Trinidad Sanchez province.

"injured" could mean anything from a scrape or a bruise to fractured or dismembered limbs. I've never been a fan of the word as it doesn't really illustrate the severity of some "injuries". There should be a separate category for "Permanent" or "Disabling" injuries. Sort of like the military term "No longer fit for combat."

Sad to hear about the kids. In this country though it's a given. There would have to be profund changes at every level of society involving motor vehicle traffic and transit for there to even be a beginning to reform regarding this issue, to see fewer incidences like this occur.
