Kathy, the drive from the Santo Domingo airport all the way across the country to Cabarete is a long one, especially after a long flight and if you're not familiar with the roads. I'd suggest one of several things: fly into Puerto Plata airport, which is right next door to Cabarete, take a local flight from Santo Domingo to Cabarete (although for that you'll have to go to Herrera airport on the other side of Santo Domingo city from the international airport), or spend a night in the old colonial zone of Santo Domingo, rest up and acclimate yourself, then head out for your cross country venture.
