Does anyone have a US phone with Verizon and can they roam in The DR? Did you have to do anything special. I'm particularly interested in people who have a company Verizon phone...But anyone who does have a verizon phone and gets to roam and use it in The DR, please respond.

My company used to have AT&T phones, which was great, because when I went to The DR it automatically switched to Orange and it worked like a charm. Now they have switched to Verizon and last couple of times I was down there I had no service at all anywhere in The DR, which presents a big problem for me as I cannot attend to clients without calling my US voicemail and then spending a lot to call them back from The DR. When I go to Mexico or Canada my Verizon phone works great. I would expect it to be the same or even better in The DR as Claro used to be Verizon.

Last time I even called Verizon, before I left The US to make sure I had international roaming enabled and I supposedly did, but when I arrived down there...NO Freakin' Service...:tired:

So if anyone can direct me as to what it is that I'm missing it would be greatly appreciated.

It would require a number change, but if you get a service like ringcentral.com, you can forward your calls wherever you want (or get voicemails in email, etc). Ringcentral does allow international forwarding.

The point of having control over forwarding calls is that you can have a local cellphone number in each country via a GSM chip. You just pick up a new chip at the airport in whichever country you are visiting.. I've used my phone in 6-7 countries so far.

Then you can make sure your US inbound line is always working by forwarding to your latest country. Thus you're not dependent on Verizon putting together agreements for roaming. All you need is a GSM capable phone.

Your costs will be significantly lower as well since you won't be roaming anywhere.

Verizon Wireless roams in most of the country, did you enter *228 SEND to update your PRL, (Preferred Roaming List)?

I've used my Verizon phone on a spur from the airport & hotel.
It roams automatically (although Verizon prefers you set it up before you travel by dialing in- most probably how the previous poster stated) on incoming & outgoing calls but the per-minute price is exorbitant.

I have used my USA Verizon phone roaming receive calls at 40 cents a minute.

But out it's like 1.69 a minute.

If u have internet access. Call your clients through Skype for 2 cents a minute or Yahoo Messenger Phone Out Service for 1 cents a minute both to USA.

Using Yahoo Messenger phone out from USA to D.R. 9 cents to some cells and house phones and other times it might be 14 cents. Skype USA to D.R> is 17 cents.

I have a Verizon Razor.

Your other alternative is purchase a cheap prepaid Claro phone and when clients need you in an emergency they can text message you via internet to your Claro phone for free. All incoming text to a prepaid Claro are free as well as incoming calls.

I have my verizon for USA and a prepaid Claro phone for here in Dominican Republic.

Good Luck

I've done it in Miami right before I leave The US (No luck)....Also tried to do it in The DR, but all I've gotten is a message that the phone is not activated in The DR.

Adrianb: I may have to do the forwarding thing. I do have a cell in The DR for which incoming calls are free, but I wonder if Verizon is going to charge me an arm and a leg for forwarded calls to a Dominican number. I'm sure they will charge a forwarding fee for each call (not sure if per minute), but I wonder if they charge roaming charges also.

I bet forwarding to a DR number will not be more expensive than your roaming charge. Several years ago, when I used to live in the USA I had a T-Mobile and I paid direct dial US$0.40 to the DR. Forwarding prices were the same, and the best thing is the forwaring to International number does not use up minutes.

I don't know if this can be of any help but I have the Motorola Razor V ? and my service is with Verizon here in NY. When I travel to Santo Domingo, at the Las Americas Airport , I go into the Verizon/Codetel office upstairs and they bypass my NY Verizon service and reactivate my phone with a temporary phone card validated connection for only DR$ 300.00 pesos. Right there, I add a dominican verizon card refill for an additional DR$ 200.00 and I start calling my friends right from the Airport!!!. When I am in the plain back to NY I simply switch my phone to my NY Verizon account number. End of the story. I hope this helps you somewhat. Lenny1:glasses:

The OP specifically wants access to their US Verizon line, activating a local line does not solve their problem. Verizon Dominicana is now Claro... for a year now. BTW, it's FREE to activate a CDMA line with Claro, you need only purchase a card during your visit! Thanks for your help.

Hello all. I just left DR on 3/30. I used my Verizon phone with no problems throughout the island however make sure you dial *228, opt.2 B4 you leave your area. Roaming for me was $1.29/min and 0.19 & 0.25 cents/min per call to a cell or landline. Hope this helps....
