I was shopping (in Canada) for the ingredients to my pollo guisado con arroz & habichuela recipes...

I realized that I have no idea what the second verdura is called in english... (I recognize it by the look and smell and found it in a West Indian grocery, the guy there had no clue what is was called either).

So not Cilantro but the other one... the wide flat leaves... what are they called?

mmm

parsley or basil or bay leaves?

nope... basil and bay leaves are too short/small and parsley is more flowery?... :ermm: this is long and flat... and has a distinct smell... you know it's the right one as soon as you take a wiff... like ahhhh yessss this is it...

It is probably what they call "cilantro ancho" here...very distinct flavor. Used in sancochos and soups (and, I guess, in guisados!!)

"Verdura" is also called "cilantrico" (coriander) and "cilantro ancho" is the one with the long flat leaves and stronger flavour.

I believe Puerto Ricans call it culantro. my mom would call it cilantro sabanero, que crece en la sabana, (grows in the meadows), but yes my mother in law calls it verdura, verdura actually is vegetables.

Is this it?

If it's like cilantro with flat leaves it's Italian parsley. Tastes milder than curly parsley and easier to wash.

Just checked...

with my Mom(great cook of all things Dominican) and she agrees with HB, she called it "cilantro ancho" too. It's almost time for sancocho again;the chickens are getting nervous.:paranoid:

My God!!

See!! This is one of the reasons why I love this Forum!!

I host foreigner students here in L.A. and last night I made a Sancocho. My guess is Japanise and loved the way the sancocho smelled. He pulled one of the leaves out and asked me the name of it. To be honest, I didn't know the name in English and told him that we call it Cilantro Ancho back home. To my surprise you guys were discussing the name today!! Thanks everybody for making peoples life easier!! No matter what the question is, you guys always help!

Love you all! M.A.R, Hilbilly, AnnaC, Miguel, Princess, Momita, etc.. just to mention a few, there's too many!!! uuufffff

Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to ask around :)

Cilantro Ancho or Sabanera in spanish, so I guess in english... the "other" cilantro or culantro? :cheeky: sure makes things tasty anyway...
