Get a US based SIM Card?

Seriously, VIVA does not have a roaming option in the US?

If you had VIVA in Bahrain, it seems like you could roam:

But is it the same company?

No. Dominican. Purchased and used in Santo Domingo. But in the USA does not work.

I think VIVA has a parent company. Just like ALTICE and CLARO do as well.

If VIVA Bahrain can roam, why not VIVA Dominicano?

Maybe check settings? On iPhone: settings>cellular>roaming ? May find the fix in settings ?

Be careful what you wish for. You may get a big surprise when the bill comes. Claro has free roaming in the US and other places.

Just to keep it alive. So that not to lose the number after 3 months of inactivity.

VIVA DR has nothing to do with VIVA in other countries, neither Bolivia nor Bahrain.

VIVA DR belongs to the same person as Aster cable company and Telemicro channel networks - Gomez Diaz.

Oh well, glad I didn't go with VIVA. Looks like the OP does not have a good option in the US.

(Is Altice any better or is there a solution for VIVA in the US that is not obvious? )

All companies in DR have Roaming disabled unless you request it. You need to request it before leaving the country.
How dumb is that? looks like irsav is SOL.

But wait, on our last trip to the USA, my wife was getting calls from the DR on her phone and I am sure she never requested roaming to be on.
Is this something new?

she may have had a postpaid plan which includes roaming, and therefore it was active. Instructions on Viva website call for preactivation via a call center or short call code

If it’s just about keeping the number, you can top it off from anywhere.
How to top off?
Yes. Just keep the number.
Each time after 3-4 months in Florida or England our Dominican number is dead.

This place works like a charm from any Country to the DR. App for cell or on laptop.

Yes, VIVA works with Roaming in USA, by default the service is off, you have to activate the service, if you download the app can activate the roaming service without calling cuatomer Service, I used roaming for calls in Canada and worked very good with Rogers, kept the Data service off, used Wifi for internet.

Ezetop can be used to top anynumber, also can download the app they have with viva call recarga viva, or Viva app can do it too.
There are multiple apps for this as I pointed out Ding also. A few more work also from anywhere.
