Hey everyone - I am trying to find out a place where I could volunteer in DR and do something useful (i.e. work as a teacher or build houses for people who need them, etc.)...I visited a few years ago and loved the country and the people, and I would love to be able to live there and make myself useful. I wouldn't require anything more than food and a place to stay (I'm a recent college graduate with no expenses or obligations, so money isn't too much of a problem for me, once I get enough to buy a ticket to DR, which is easy)...I would like to work for a Church program or at a school somewhere, but have no idea where to look or who to ask...I have looked into organizations such as peace corps and habitat but I don't think either has exactly what I'm looking to do. If anyone has any suggestions or contacts, please let me know...thanks!

I noticed nearly all of those organizations mentioned or linked to in this forum are based at the North Coast, understandably because of the expat population there. I might be interested in this for a future visit, but I find it very hard to find similar projects in the Santo Domingo area. Are there any?

Many NGOs are located in the Capital, though their field of operations often exist in the provinces. Is there anything in particular you want to do? Profamilia, for example, works with youth groups in Sabana Perdida among other places. ONE RESPE works with youths in Haina. There are plenty of opportunities, i am sure, once you start hunting.

PabloFantastico,

If you are looking to volunteer you may want to check out the thread further down in this section titled "Update on School in Charamicos". posted by jrf. They may be looking for volunteers and they are located in Sosua.

I too would like to move to the DR to teach english or volunteer for something (however, my current financial situation will not allow me to do so I am off to China to pay the debts off first - you are lucky to have graduated clean and free of debt!!) Check out this link, most jobs are in Santo Domingo, no salary, but they do pay your room and board. Some positions look more promising than others...You can even go to coach baseball!

I travelled to Puerto Plata in March with my daughter--had a wonderful time--met lots of people but did not experience much outside of the resort except for a jeep tour. I regret not being more adventuresome at the time. Now, I want to go back to volunteer--I can only go for 1 week in August with a charter package with a resort so I would be available to volunteer during the days for the week I am there. I know it is not much time to give but right now that is all I have and it is something I really want to do. I am a mother of 4 and would really like to do something with the schools/school program. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Thanks.
