Washington Post reporter highlights the high cost of contraception in the Dominican Republic and looks into culturally-approved sex minors.

It reports on efforts to reduce child pregnancy. San Cristobal and Azua are two of the provinces with the most cases. Child marriage and having sex with a minor is illegal in the Dominican Republic, but there are few cases of prosecution.

A recent case against Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco brings to the forefront the illegalities of having sex with a minor.

It is high in many parts of the world. When you don't parent your children properly and let them skip school, drink and hang out with others doing drugs your going to get panties dropping without thinking.
I can attest to being part of that crowd in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.......

Is this a new discovery the W.P. made?

Is anyone seriously expecting any change in Dominican behaviour in the next life time?

Live here if you like, visit if you like.
What it is today it will be in the near future.

Its a cultural thing. Good luck changing it
A culture without desire to advance or better the lives of their children.
I've been in many poor countries, where the poor realize that education will give their children a better life.
Where poor people strive to better their lives.

Here it's the plastic chair looking at the sky, telenovelas, alcohol y queja about the government.
Si dio quiere.

A cultural island thing indeed, even for many who have been afuera.........who knows what the country is called.

Yet in theory one would expect more of the W.P. ........in theory.

This time you really can't blame the government. It's a bad investigated article, the governent is really working hard to solve this problem.
The mentioned "high cost of contraception" are just "fake news". Contraception is provided for free all over thye country to the people with zero or low income and they really do a lot to promote it. Dominicans just don't care about it and thats it. The avarage Dominican girl takes more time to choose her beauty salon than she takes to chosse the father of her future child.

It might change, but it will take longer.

Look how long it took for public schools to eliminate the old schedule of morning the young ones and in the afternoon the older ones. That schedule is great if most of the population live in rural areas and are subsistence farmers. The kids, particularly the older ones, often are used in helping the father farm his plot. Dominican society became mostly urban and it took over 40 years to change the old school schedule.

Life expectancy was rather low until a few decades ago and having children early was the norm as well as having large families. In rural societies where life is short and children mortality is high, that’s a good scheme of having children before you die and make sure some survive to adulthood.

Population growth has been falling for a few decades and so to the amount of children per women.

The DR may have a high teen pregnancy, but I doubt it hasn’t changed much in all these years.

I've been told by women in the past that they got pregnant to "get that out of the way" (Para salir de eso") or in other words, the sooner, the better.

Next the W.P. will discover that the DR has very high rates:

C- sections
Traffic accidents
Illiteracy
Poor Education

We could work as foreign correspondent's to add some credibility and make money 🤣
We just bought another property in Jarabacoa. The seller, a woman around 40 could print her name and read a little bit, but she brought her teenage daughter ( 18 years old) to read the legal documents for her. She could read very well and the mother although not educated was quite intelligent. Education helps, but it doesn't make a person intelligent, just more knowledgeable about certain things. Daughter is in university studying to be an accountant. Almost, not all, the kids I know are more educated than their parents and many have university degrees. Most of our teachers are single women and none of them get pregnant unless they want to. Some have the Depo-Provera injection, which is readily available.

Most mainstream media, including NYT, have become tabloid-like with the most superficial analysis of world events, if any, slathered over with human interest puffery--entertainment.
agree!

the gastritis is a big thing. Quite a few people where i am from die from it.
I believe it is caused by a bacteria in the water ie rivers and drinking it.
With bottled water the incidence is getting less.
My wife had it about 12 years ago. It was horrible, the pain was unbelievable. With treatment and a strict diet it went away after 6 months.

The Washington Post has become a tabloid.
You can thank Jeff Besos for that. But no worries AI will fix it as he can fire all the Gen Z morons who write articles like this while he and his concubine, Lauren Sanchez, enjoy their new Florida home as they also build a lavish doomsday shelter.
