My wife and I are looking at retiring in the DR, but we're not really beach people. We like the culture, the affordability and the occasional access to beaches. Is the weather significantly cooler in Constanza than in Jarabacoa? Is it significantly less humid?

15 years ago we moved to New Mexico from Louisiana, which we left to escape the heat and humidity. We're not looking for a high desert, but one poster here pointed out that "paradise is hot as hell." Not in my mind.
Thanks,

Many Dominicans retire to the mountains near both as the air is much nicer than the coast- they are both kind of similar, come here and check them out. I have lived near both - currently near Constanza and the air is wonderful.

Jarabacoa and Constanza have an ideal climate. Jarabacoa has a less humid subtropical climate while Constanza is more 'continental' by Dominican standards. For example, you will need a sweater some days.

The closest thing to natural air conditioning in the DR.

In some winter months, temps actually dip below freezing in Constanza during some nights and a light frost covers everything. Truly spectacular, for a Caribbean country!

If you want truly cold climate, simply head to the Valle Nuevo. Even though its a protected natural preserve, it gets really cold up there.

I once suffered 3 degrees Celsius in La Cienaga de Manabao. However, my worst three-dog-night happened in a secluded thatched hut nestled in an arid valley about 25 kilometers south of San Juan de la Maguana.

Might I suggest San Jos? de las Matas? Closer to Civiliation....hehe

I love Jarabacoa, and it is conveniently located...and not all that far from "civilization" --> which to me, is Santiago de los Caballeros.

There are some gorgeous hills to the south of Santiago that have fantastic views of the whole valley. Water is good, and there are phones and electricity, as such as that might be.

No matter where you go you'll have the same basic problems: electricity and phone service for you and your computer...but those have been long solved by most of us.

If I might, let me suggest you look at Santiago. We do get warm, but it is seldom a heavy, humid heat. Since November, we have been comfortable in long sleeved shirts. A few days, you can see your breath in the morning.

We'll be like that until mid-February.

And we have good public services (in a lot of places), plenty to do (http://www.dr1.com/forums/living/58748-want-join-me-4.html)
and everything is near. Beaches, Santo Domingo, higher mountains....

Think about it.
