I got married last year in DR. I looked at some resorts. Unless you have an unlimited supply of money, you're going to pay big time. You bring the liquior & they will charge you $250 pesos just to open & serve that bottle. This is just one of the hidden expenses. The hall will be super cheap, but don't let that fool you.
I got married in Fiesta de Lux or Luz. The whole wedding for 140 people was $75,000 pesos & I had the a huge amount of flowers/roses. My friends from the states (we are from Westchester) thought they were in a funeral because of all the roses & flowers. It was impressive.

Hi, that is called a corkage fee and almost all establishments charge this cost because they "need" to make up for the lost of you bringing your own liquor. Same thing with a cake. If you want to bring your own cake (not use the facility's bakery) then they will most likely charge you a fee to cut and serve the cake. Unfair? Yes, but what can you do :-(

As far as resorts for weddings, well I am partial to Casa de Campo because of Altos de Chavon. Also, my husband proposed to me there, overlooking the Chavon River so there I am biased ;-) Altos de Chavon is probably one of he most romantic spots I have ever seen for a wedding, but be forewarned, the small church, St. Stanislaus, is VERY small and 100 guest will not be able to fit. I hear they often do outdoor weddings.

My husband really wanted us to marry there, but the church was just too tiny. We chose to marry in SD. This turned out to be the better decision afterall. We married at Las Mercedes church and had the reception at La Atarazana. We had great vendors and all went super. Let me know if you need any further information.

Natasha

Re: they say...

You can, but I hear you have to be a VERY "important" person in the DR for the Arzobispado to grant you that wish :-/

I myself never inquired about getting married at the Cathedral because once we had decided to marry in SD, I really wanted it to be in El Convento (Church and Convent Los Dominicos), the church I frequented the most in the capital as a child. Besides, I just think it is such a beautiful church! However, the Convento only does two weddings a month and our date was already booked, hence we chose Las Mercedes. Hope this helps.

Natasha

Re: weddings/ natasha

Dear Natasha or anyone who can help me.

I am getting married in August at the Howard Johnson In San Pedero de Macoris. We are being charged 1,100 dollars for 50 people. Which includes decoration, a menu, and beer.
We are bringing our own cake. We will be charged with all kinds of other hidden fees as well?

Re: weddings/ natasha

Hi Donald,

Although I am not familiar with the HJ, US $1,100 for 50 people seems like an incredible deal. I would make sure to receive all details in writing and if possible, pay with a credit card. If they offer any samples of the menu to taste, by all means taste them! And of course, ASK away any questions you may have. Since the locale is a hotel, they may very well have hidden charges, so make sure, again, that you get everything in writing. Even a small detail such as what brand of beer you will be served should be specified in the contract.

Like I have stated before we had our wedding reception at La Atarazana, which is a restaurant with beautiful courtyards. We brought in our own cake and beverages. Now, it has been three years and if my memory serves me right, I do not think the Atarazana charged us a fee to cut and serve the cake, but they did charge the famous corkage fee. As far as flowers and decorations, we lucked out because the courtyards' flowers and trees were in full bloom (tons of bougainvilleas, palms and even banana trees) so we had very simple table centerpieces of tea roses. Hope this helps.

Regards,
Natasha
