Check to see if you need shots for Yellow Fever. We did last year, when we flew to Brasil via Panama.

Have any US Citizens used the Brazilian Embassy in SD to get a Tourist Visa for Brazil with their US passport?

I've heard that the documentation requirements and timelines are different than the embassy in the US.

Can anyone share their experience with this?

Wow I never would have guessed that Americans and Canadians would need a visa to enter Brazil so I looked it up.

Americans and Canadians also require a visa to enter Brazil. What is a Visa? It is simply permission from a country that you may enter for a limited time and travel there for a specific purpose. It takes the form of a stamp placed directly in your passport. This is for what Brazil calls reciprocity ? in other words, because the US and Canada require a visa from Brazilian citizens. It costs US $100 (exactly what the US charges Brazilians) to apply for this visa, which must be done at the Brazilian Consulate that serves your state. Some of these consulates allow application by mail, others in person, but all allow the use of service agencies, in which case additional fees apply. A list of Brazilian Consulate websites is found in the Links section where applications can be found online.

Brazilian Visas for US Citizens are very Straight foward to Process in the Santo Domingo and usually all you need is Your Passport,Application,Fee of $131usd,Proof of onward Travel, and some sort of Proof of funds like a Credit Card or Bank statement
Processing time is usually from 1 to 3 Business days
But BEWARE Unlike the USA where you are usually issued a 5 year Multiple entry Visa.In Santo Domingo they tend to give you only a 90 day Visa renewable one time in Brazil for a Total Visit of 6 months.Meaning if you need to Travel again to Brazil you will need another Visa.So youre better of applying for it in the States.A way around this is Sending your Passport to a Friend in the USA via DHL or Fedex & having them do this whole visa for you as the applicant doesnt need to apply themselves. This Info was current of as January 2010 so Things might of changed, but this has been the experience for several US citizen friends applying for visas in Santo domingo.
Good Luck and Keep us posted
