I know the meaning of "egoist" in English, but the way A Dominicana described it to me in Spanish, it didn't sound right.

She said it meant someone who doesn't express themselves and keeps their thoughts to themselves.

This doesn't sound right, so I would like clarification on this.

Egoista is someone selfish, someone that does not like to share or give anything at all even if they have too many of.
Someone that usually throws away things before giving it up to the needy.

For a dominican not to know what egoista means, must not be 100% dominican. I think that either you didn't understand her or she is really not dominican.

OR she is calling you names and then saying it is not so bad. Often this word is used if you wont give them what THEY want. So if she wants a new phone and you say no,she will throw this word at you. In many cases means selfish!

i think the problem is in the lack of translating skills. miesposo has a good command of english but he cannot translate anything. he can say that "gato" is "cat" but he cannot clearly translate more complicated things even thou he understands the meaning and uses the word in a correct context :)

Someone who thinks of themself first/only has no regard for others.
Could be hurtful if you have any feelings left!
What were you denying her??????......... She wants more:)

Lobo Tropical has given you the perfect definition: "Someone who thinks of themself first/only".

She might find your reticence to share your thoughts as being selfish.

It almost sounds as a Men-are-from-Mars-Women-are-from-Venus phenomenon that many couples experience, even when not from different cultural backgrounds. Only you can decide if the shoe fits.

I m up there with self-centered, self-absorbed, self-conscious, autocratic, selfish, self-involved.

Egotistical

SHALENA

Ugh. That brings back nightmares of having to discern the difference between an "egoist" and an "egotist" way back in 7th grade English class.

Anyways, it's apparent from the responses that the definition is not what she claims it to be, even in Dominican-ese.
