I have never seen these critters before...and i have been going to boca for years. they pretty much lurk in the deaper water and stay on the ocean floor and just pulsate. They never have really bothered me as i wear diving shoes. But my dom friend says that they do sting.

THey dont bother me because the dont appear until u are in the deaper water...and by then i have my snorkle and mask on and are above them.

THey sure are ugly and creapy tho.

any reason they are sudenly so populated????

I was warned years ago by a gringo that owned a place in BC. Us gringos should never eat small fish or critters when the water is warm. The small fish have a poison that affects those not used to it.
JZY, I've read your posts for years, and know you like BC, as I. With the port there and uped imports from everywhere, strange, insects etc. are showing up throughout the country.
I used to love getting in the water at BC. Then about 5 years ago came back with a serious ear infection.
Warning!!! Only go in the water at BC tues-sat. Bring an ear drop bottle of 50% white vinegar--50% iso alcohol. Drop it in your ears whenever you come out of the water.
JZY, BC is not the place we enjoyed several years ago. Many of us hope and think it will come back.
Until then, be careful, Trust Juan and make "passionate love" with Dolores!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Omg!!! u know delores!!! lololol. I think one might come away with something worse than u can get in the water. Juan is a sweetie. Totaly crazy...but one of the people I look forward to seeing in BC.

Yeah..i have been a supporter of BC over the years...but i must say that over my last few trips the water was iffy. There WAS a LOT of rain tho.

The "medusa" arent insects tho. they are jelly fish that lurk on the ocean floor. I had never seen them before...and there is not just one or two....but MANY.

As far as boca in general...it has really cleaned up its act as far as the prostition etc is conserned. I've met some wonderful folks there over the years...and it just feels like "home" when I go back there.

Jellyfish are something of a reverse canary species and usually when there is an abundance of them(called blooms), it often indicates that there is something bad happening to the environment. They can thrive in waters that have little oxygen and high anaerobic bacteria levels But Medusa are fairly common in the Caribbean and seen I've them in shallows in several areas. If you start to see them in the millions(which has happened), then they can affect fishing and tourist industries.

Some 30 years ago, the biggest foot hazard were the black long-spined sea urchins diadema antillarum which were troublesome because their spines are very difficult remove, painful and subject to infection. But the vast majority were wiped out by a toxic bacteria bloom in 1982 and the species is taking a long time to recover. There were regions where the entire sea floor was covered with them and their 8"-10" spines.

They were(and are) an important species for the health of the reefs in that they eat algae, which the corals can't compete well with on their own. They also need clean, flowing water to thrive. You won't see large aggregations of both spiny urchins and Medusa.

excellent reply peter/brat.

Years ago on one trip there were many man-o-wars,,,but have never seen them again. wasnt sure if the bloom was something natural or man made via polution. there was a TON of rain when i was there last trip. was thinking about going next week for a short trip...but with the tropical storm lurking i will put it off until september. but darn..it sure seems to have been raining a heck of a lot for the past year!!!!!
