What to Do in Santo Domingo

Would love some advice on what to do on a short trip to Santo Domingo.
We will take the bus from Sosua for an overnight or two night stay.
We like music and art.
What are would you recommend we stay in
Are there any city tours
Is one overnight enough or should we do two
Are weekends better than weekdays

You will be able to find nice hotels in Zona Colonial or the casino type hotels on the Malecon.

The bus ride from Sosua to Santo Domingo is close to four hours. You might want to consider staying two nights in Santo Domingo.

In additionto the Zona Colonial ..

For art you should take a taxi to Museo Bellapart in the Honda dealership on Avenida JF Kennedy - this has an excellent permanent colection of Dominican art + regular exhibitions. The entrance is via a lift in the showroom.

In the Plaza Cultural the Modern Art Gallery has a smaller permanent collection currently on the top floor.

Also in the Plaza de Cultura is the Museum of Dominican Man good for its excellent collection of pre-columbian artefacts and Dominican ethnology.

I second this museum, it is a great way to learn the history of the island. All the signs are in Spanish but you can ask for english tour guides. Sorry I do not know the cost of this service.

I would recommend 2 nights in the Capital, 1 is not enough.

I also strongly recommend El Jard?n Bot?nico. You can walk for hours and the surroundings are gorgeous. You will get to see a good amount of wildlife (bugs, lizards, snakes, birds..)

The Dominican Symphony has a website here Fundacion Sinfonia , it's in English and Spanish, but it doesn't look like they have anything on the schedule in the near future, with the exception of a benefit concert on March 17 and another concert on April 2nd, and May 21.

There are always lots of concerts going on, but it's best to either check the local paper when you get here, but also check out Ticket Express for a calendar of the more pop music type concerts Ticket Express - Sin filas, ni perder tiempo

Casa de Teatro usually has something on - as well as the exhibitions they have live music and/or theatre performances. Calle Arzobispo Meri?o casi esq. Arz. Portes in the Colonial Zone. The Centro Cultural de Espa?a, almost next door, also has exhibitions.

Check out museum of Amber in the Colonial Zone. It is a very interesting place to visit.
