in a spirit of a resident not a tourist, that in london stopped me from seeing madame tussauds i have never considered santiago as a tourist attraction having always treated it as a shopping heaven (i live in POP).

however, a friend has guests and they all want to go to santiago on saturday dragging me along as i am the only person who even remotely knows the city. now, i know all the shops but i have no idea what else is there to see. i have visited monument and PUCMM, the cemetery (i like cemeteries) and not much else.

i am sure there is more to santiago then feverish consumerism whose temples i know so well but - what is it? where can i take our little party and what can i show them? i would appreciate all suggestions along with directions how to get there (public transport only - it's supposed to be an adventure for turistas :cheeky:). also any websites telling santiago's history (can be in spanish).

we will be travelling by metro so this is our start point.

thanks for help!

One, for sure, is Centro Leon, a great place to view the history of the DR. It's a "not miss". Another really interesting place is the Tomas Morel Folklore Museum, where you may see Carnival masks being made. It's also a treasure worth some time.

From Metro take a taxi to the Centro Le?n ($100 pesos), and enjoy their different areas: Art, Anthropology and always a special exhibit. Eat lunch at the cafeter?a. Try the desserts, they are great!
Then take another taxi (the receptionist will call you one) and go downtown to the Duarte Park. Go see the cathedral inside is interesting. Then to the Casa de Arte (nearby, just ask)

Finally, take a taxi and go to the library at PUCMM and look at the art. Or just drive around the city looking at home in the Cerros de Gurabo...Make a deal withthe taxi guy....Or hire JJ for the DAY!!....(Welcome To Paradise Transportation) might be easier all around.

If you want to dine, do go to the Pez Dorado (only if you are dressed with pants. jeans, sleeves, socks, shoes....) Order carefully, since the portions are large...

I made the mistake of trying to eat an order of Chicken Chow Mein at Pez Dorado by myself. It was enough for four people. I could only dent it. Very nice restaurant to eat at.

This is a great post! I will bookmark it. So, I should not bring shorts when I travel there in February? It was pretty warm in SD when I was there around that time. I just cannot wait :bunny:
