Where to buy amber?

I'm going on a short trip to DR and planning on visiting Santo Domingo, Santiago and Puerto Plata. Where is the best place, price and quality wise, to buy amber or amber jewelry? I guess it won't be a tourist area. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can buy it quite anywhere in RD. But be carefull with the immitation.

The secure place is in Puerto Plata, in the Amber Museum (in which you can observe the moskito which was showned at the beginning of the movie "Jurassic Park"). And inside, you can find any information you want upon the amber. If you are interesting, I recommand you to take a local guide in the museum.

Have a nice trip, Pardo (djpardo@hotmail.com)

NB: may be you can do something for me : when you're in DR, look for where I can have the "Chart" of the dominican music (or may be someone who can e-mail me it each two weeks) ?

I have seen a lot of fake plastic amber with all sorts of insects & small animals. Real amber floats in seawater, the fakes sink. There is also fake Larimar, looks like turquoise. Buy your jewellery in one of Harrison,s stores, or at the Amber Museum in P Plata. Don't use the services of a Guide to buy stuff, they live off the comissions. Canadian Bob.

The cheapest place to buy real amber is at the source, the mines of La Cumbre, which are a couple of km north of Santiago on the Carretera Turistica. You can go directly to the mines (ask directions at Cemi, a restaurant in the village) or look to one of the stalls set up along the side of the main road.

What's that?

Thanks for your response. I hate to admit my ignorance, but what is "chart"? Is it something like notations or notes (musical)? I'd be glad to help, but I'm just at loss here.

Re: What's that?

I think what he is refering to is the top songs of the DR (ie. a dominican version of the "american top 40") I'm assuming Pardo wants to keep on top of the DR music scene. Just my interpretation, I could be wrong!
