Advertise in the local press once in the country, there are loads of geeks who would appreciate a few extra pesos, how good they are at teaching and you are at learning I don't know but I'd hazard a guess finding a wizzkid won't be an issue.

Or you could just ask/PM one of the Roberts (DR1 Owner or CobraBoy), I think they are and will know techy people.

Hi Pitt,

I started my career as a hardcore programmer, then moved to Wall Street.
What I can share with you is that it's hard to get smart programmers here - have a look at some of the top performing sites in the country like supercarros - they're all slow and poorly built.

My recommendation is to actually try to learn on your own! Compared to 20 years ago, there's SO MANY resources available online now, it's amazing how little actual direct teaching you need. Plus there are tons of online forums where people can answer your simple questions.

Here's a good place to start actually, and work backwards:

Ruby on Rails Tutorial: Learn Web Development with Railsbook and screencasts by Michael Hartl

Good luck!

There are hundreds of tutorials online.

But it takes years to build proficiency.

Programmers here don't make a lot of coin. They compete with other third/developing nations in tech outsourcing. FTers here make well under RD$3000mo.

WOW that's cheaper than I thought... perhaps you get what you pay for?

Typo. I meant well under RD$30,000 (not 3,000...mea culpa)

Problem is they have a difficult time competing with programmers from Russia, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, etc., on both price and skill. Over all.
