Can anyone comment on which mercado would be the largest selection wise and have the best prices to stock up on beer, liquor and snacks in Sosua? Also would a person wishing to buy a large quantity be better off to shop at a larger market in POP and if so where? I have read some bar prices and they mention two sizes of local Presidente beer small and grande what are those sizes in ounces or liters? Is standard 12 ounce beer a small and a grande a quart or is it like a corona vs a coronita 12 to 7 or so?

Thanks, any idea how much a 12 pack of presidente costs and perhaps a bottle of Patron and Absolute vodka or a 5 pound bag of ice or a 12 pack of 7up?

small and big Presidentes are 12 ozs and 32 ozs. can be purchased anywhere one is dealing in cash!

the supermercado in Sosua is 47 pesos per 12 oz bottle or 282 pesos for a six pack. about 8 bucks american for a six pack of something local.

Thanks for the info but $8 for a six pack?

I can't imagine $8 for a six pack of local beer unless it is a convenience store. You must be able to buy a case of local beer for under $15 at a bigger store.

Janet's in Cabarete was no different. maybe we got the gringo prices at Janets, but the Supermercado in Sosua was posted for all to see. It was on the main road, non-beach side. can't miss it.

No such thing as gringo prices when buying presidente. Stores are working on 10% or less
profit. Buy Brahma it's a better beer and they are not as greedy as CND. I know.

I heard of this and bohemia what does both cost a case of 24? Should I be bringing a couple of duty free bottles along if I want imported premium liquor?

I have seen Brahma as low as RD150/six pack, I know where to get it for less, but I can't ruin a good thing!

Any comments on the two and what about Bohemia anybody know of a distributor like in Mexico where you can go right to Pacifico bottling showroom and buy at 5 case or 10 case discounts? Yah I know I drink a lot but I do share.

Why don't you just fill up the auxiliary tanks of your yacht with Brugal Extra Viejo in Puerto Plata?

Super Super has the best prices on imported spirits.

The diesel residue from 330 gallons of fuel would make it a little oily. And being it is an older one that I got when I repo'd my condo in Florida I can't afford to even cruise that far. I prefer the short bus from the airport (rented ecobox) and a stop at a liquor mart where I can get creative. A blended brugal rum with cheetos and cream does sound tempting. Crushed liked many others from the recession. Down to shopping bargan hotels and beer prices but still willing to do my part for any economy that shows the proper appreciation. ( almost forgot where I was but even after half a gallon still ok)

I agree. I like the taste of Brahma Lite best of all.

Brahma is nibbling away at CND's market dominance.

They should advertise that CND (the company that brews Presidente) is 49% foreign owned to shatter the perception that Presidente is THE Dominican beer.

I'll bet Sun Tzu would drink to that.

You may save a little if you buy a plastic case ("guacal") and pay for the bottles of the 12oz President the first time (President bottles are recyclable). At Janet's supermarket in Cabarete, the 24 case will cost you RD$880. That works if you're staying for a long time. Aboslute is around between RD$700-800. Ice comes in a large bag which is standard; I've never checked the weight or seen larger or smaller bags (RD$30 at Janet's). Cheaper beer which doesn't require you to buy the plastic case and bottles, and also brewed by President, is Bohemia. You can buy a 24 case in a box. I don't recall the price now but it is less than the 880 that I pay for Presidente.

Neither Playero nor Janet nor any large grocery store has "gringo" prices. We all pay the same price. Sorry to quote Janet's prices but that's where I buy more often; Playero is more expensive than Janet's.

There's a place in Sosua Abajo, an Association (no membership required), where I used to buy and has very good prices. I can't remember exactly the name but I'm sure that one of the other members will. Otherwise, try the Supermercado Sosua. They have better prices than Playero.

Great line, Celt.

Drinking and war are both forms of art, as is business.
