Which area to stay?

Hi I am considering traveling into Punta Cana or Puerto Plata for a week with my wife and kids ages 12 and 14. I have not been to the DR before, and we are planning for mid April. We are not the types to just veg out all week. We like to ride bikes, snorkle, and maybe take in a tour or two and do not like to stay at resorts, but rather like to stay at a condo rental or house.

Can someone lend me a hand on what the best area might be to stay at for a family that wants some beach time plus a good bit of activity as well?

Thank you for mentioning those spots! After investigation I find you are correct. I have booked my flights into the local airport, now I just have to decide on a condo. I have one in a community 60 seconds off the Cabarete beach and another that is located between Cabarete and Sosua.

If I stay in Cabarete I am wondering if I would need a car at all? If I stay between the two towns I most definately would need a car. I hear that the food runs about half the cost in Sosua as Cabarete.

Any advise?

Thanks for the help. What type of weather can I expect for mid April?

Is the snorkling or diving worthwhile? and if so where?
