Can someone pls. tell me why it's so hard to find Mantecado ice cream nowadays??? I remember when the guy with the push cart would come around, ring his bell, and I run down to buy my Mantecado popsicle. Needless to say he doesnt come around anymore. Niether does the guy with the hot pasteles in the hoya but that's another story. My gripe is that just about every ice cream shop I walk into proclaims to have Mantecado but it's really just plain vanilla. What's that all about?? Why have they changed? Am I the only person who thinks Mantecado beats vanilla 100X over? I like Hagen Daz as much as the next guy but when you mess with something as delicious, delectable, heavenly, and just plain yummy as Mantecado there's really something wrong and it bugs the hell out of me! My only consolation is that some Helados Bon shops still serve it but it's only a few and even they are succumbing to the Vanilla Craze.

Susan, I am a bit confused. Maybe I can learn something new here, but isn't mantecado just another word for ice cream? You know, the regular ice cream (the creamy stuff in jars) that comes in different flavors. My family always called ice cream mantecado (mainly to be more specific) and helado was the "ice cream" that was sold by the vendors (popcicles) and the "home made" types as well - the ones made of all sorts of different flavors (coconut being my fave) and sold commonly at people's homes. Do I have this right? Of course you can also call the creamy stuff helado..,just to add to the confusion.

Ah...what I do miss is the freshly boiled corn sold in the streets, the peanuts, jalao, fresh cajuiles, pan de fruta, and the totally bad for you FRITURA.

Well Natasha, I'm not going to say you're wrong because everyone, Dominicans alike, has different names for the same thing. I call ice cream helado no matter what type it is. However, when I say "Mantecando" I'm referring to the Dominican version of vanilla which can be identified by it's distinctive buttery flavor. It's not white but yellow and super-creamy. I've never seen it in a jar though. Also to add to the confusion, what do YOU call flavor-ice? I ask every Carribean person I know and I've found that Dominicans are the only people that call them esquimalitos (not sure of the spelling). As far as the boiled corn goes, I still have it en route to Salinas...hehe

The correct spelling is " Eskimalito " y biene de la palabra eskimo referring to eskimos quienes son relaccionado con
el frio al ser nativo de Alaska

Wow, I finally have someone to back me up! People think I'm nuts when I say "Eskimalito". Julio, I'm going to print this page and refer to it everytime someone tries to dispute this. Thanks again.

What a great explaination Julio. I can't wait to tell my daughter that those things we thought were "quemalitos" for so long, and didn't have a clue as to what the word meant, is actually "Eskimalito" with a good story behind the meaning of the word. Thanks for the post!

There used to be a heladeria near the TerraBus station (right across the street diagonally) in Santiago that served that delicious yellow vanilla ice cream. It had a huge selection of ice cream flavors (mango and coco were my favorites). The place was fantastic. I always stopped there when I was in Santiago. I haven't been there in years and can't remember the name of the place. I remember talking with some of the employees and they said that all the ice cream was made by the owner of the place. It was some of the best ice cream in the world. Does anyone know the name of the place and if it is still in business?

In Santiago you can still get mantecado at Helados Noris.
I think that there is an ice cream parlour just off the Conde in Santo Domingo that still offers it. Haven't been there in a month of Sundays, however.

And STOP TALKING ABOUT FOOD--I am not eating these days-like -50 lbs gone and counting, with 30-40 more to go and I still won't reach 200!!

OK??

Hey Hillbilly,
Is Helados Noris near the bus station by the park downtown?
I can't remember the name of the heladeria there, but, boy, do (did?) they have a fantastic selection of delicious ice cream. If I remember correctly, their other food was pretty good too. The place was like an old fashioned ice cream parlor open to the street. Haven't been there in years. I really have to get back to Santiago soon, but these days with the new and improved autopista it is too easy to keep on going.

I lost 5 lbs this week. The trick is to plan out a diet that gets you the nutrition you need without extra fillers. So it is not being spoiled but being wise. All that rice and beans is very filling, but there are nutrients lacking, so a person eats more trying to get the nutrients, but gets a lot more calories. If one eats less filler and more nutrients one is satisfied even more. Do you know that some fat people are actually undernourished? Because they are eating too much of certain things and not enough of others. So good luck on your diet, but the stuffed avocado is an excellent choice, some frozen juices are very good and cooling too. I made some guanabana popsicles to help get me through the dog days of August. I put in little sugar.
