The finals are today, Argentina vs. Germany and I wanted to post something in the forum about the World Cup but it has to be Spanish related at the same time. Therefore, I thought of a World Cup word scramble which is also a good way to learn sports and specifically soccer (football) vocabulary in Spanish for those who are not familiar with the words.
Although English terms are used in Spanish in sports, in my experience, baseball has much more English words or Spanish words derived from English (and phonetically adapted) than soccer does and in my opinion, it has to with the exposure of the game via television. Baseball in the US is a big money sport, soccer not so much.
There are many good articles in newspapers in Spanish about the World Cup and just reading them alone will boost your vocabulary.
Word Scramble
Each word below is related to soccer but you have to unscramble them. Unscramble each word in Spanish and give the English equivalent.
1) ogl
2) adeorrt
3) lapne
4) ?banl
5) ri?btor
6) rotoen
7)sin?el
8) eqopiu
9) eaoltp
10) drapito
11)le Ndlaimu
12)gurjoda
13) llaboniuq
14)qoreura
15)lotaguo
Best of luck to both teams today but I really would like to see Argentina hold that trophy (especially for Lionel Messi). Go Argentina!
