World Cup word scramble

The finals are today, Argentina vs. Germany and I wanted to post something in the forum about the World Cup but it has to be Spanish related at the same time. Therefore, I thought of a World Cup word scramble which is also a good way to learn sports and specifically soccer (football) vocabulary in Spanish for those who are not familiar with the words.

Although English terms are used in Spanish in sports, in my experience, baseball has much more English words or Spanish words derived from English (and phonetically adapted) than soccer does and in my opinion, it has to with the exposure of the game via television. Baseball in the US is a big money sport, soccer not so much.

There are many good articles in newspapers in Spanish about the World Cup and just reading them alone will boost your vocabulary.

You need to unscramble them in order to decipher the Spanish word (and they are soccer related)

As well, there are many synonyms for these words in Spanish so if you know of a different way or what?s more common to you, please feel free to list them in another post.

For example, el arquero- goalie. I picked what is commonly used but I prefer to use el guardameta but I have definitely used the word el arquero when speaking.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion, it was a good exercise, I was quickly going to write "No llore para mi Argentina", but I thought I look up the actual lyrics from Eva.

The correct version is "No llores por mi Argentina" ....! I remembered the use of "por" (that confuses me to no end - I translate that as don't cry because of me, but I think for Llorar, por translates to for me. I wonder what they use for the "because of me" .....!? ).

But also the "s" at the end of llores that I didn't think of, I guess Eva is really talking to Argentina directly and uses the second person "familiar" - only Eva can do that though, no !?

If you want to hear a little Spanish from Madonna then you will have to listen to her song- La isla bonita. That's about as much Spanish that you will hear from her.

Yes, No llores por m?, Argentina, the title of the song is correct in Spanish. Honestly, regarding the usage of the familiar t? in that song title if I were you, I would not even analyze it to that degree since you have no insight about the speaker to determine why she used llores instead of llore. I personally in that phrase would have used no llores as well without even thinking about it. However, I would have to listen to the lyrics to confirm this.

The usage of por and para can be difficult grammatically for people to understand when to use one over the other. However, there is logic to it. No llores por m?, Argentina, the por conveys the meaning of Don't cry- on my behalf or on my account or because of me like you said thus it has to be por. No llores para m?, does not make sense in that phrase in Spanish and cannot be used. Por in general has a lot more usage than para. Look at all those idiomatic expressions with por.

Consider the usage idiomatic- llorar por- (the verb + preposition go together)

Thanks for the link, very useful, some verbs are easier with por and para, for example last night in the Karaoke there was a song with:

Y para ti,
......


I can't sing to save my life but I like to read the lyrics, usually it is hard to understand Spanish songs, so it is a nice pass-time and an excuse to have a few beers....


So for llorar can you say:

1- She cries because of him = Ella llora por el (because he's done something bad to her, cheated or beaten her up etc.)

2- She cries for him = Ella llora para el (because he's in trouble, have a terminal illness etc.)


I don't know, sometime more context is needed to clarify the meaning and direct translation may not work....

In those two samples sentences you gave the construction would be llorar + por. Both sentences convey the motive or cause of why she cries therefore it would be llora por....

Somehow, I think you are trying to find a way to use llorar correctly followed by para which is possible but it would not have any correlation to the meanings in the two examples you gave in your sentences.

For example- Mi hijo llora para dormir or lloro para desahogarme. In these sentences para is used because it defines the purpose of the action.


Going back to the usage of llorar por. Since this thread was started because of the World Cup, I am not sure if you were following the event but when Neymar of the Brazilian team got injured by Camilo Z??iga, in the match against Colombia in quarter finals many of his team mates felt his pain- literally. It was hard to watch and he could have been injured permanently. Many newspaper headlines had llorar + por about the injury the following day. Here are two headlines and the usage of llorar por is the same as in your second sample sentence.
