Zoe Saldaña touted her Dominican heritage and migrant parents’ background in her acceptance speech after becoming the first of Dominican origin to win an Oscar. The 46-year old won the Oscar as Best Supporting Actress. Emilia Perez also won the Oscar for Best Original Song for “El Mal,” co-written by Clément Ducol, Camille and Audiard and performed by Zoe Saldaña.

This was the first Oscar win for Zoe Saldaña, born in New Jersey, USA to a Dominican father and Puerto Rican mother. When her father died in a tragic vehicle accident when she was nine years old, her mother sent her to live with her grandmother in Santo Domingo where she spent her formative teenage years and trained in dance at Ecos Espacio de Danza.

“I am a proud child of immigrant parents, with dreams and dignity and hardworking hands,” she said through tears while accepting the award for supporting actress. “And I...

Could not be happier for her, she has swept the floor this year winning at all the major awards ceremonies. The first person of Dominican heritage to ever win an Oscar!

She is a wonderful actor! Saw some commentator on TV this morning praising her, and he mentioned the movie "Columbiana." It pops up on TV every now and then, worth a watch!

Is that where she stars in a movie about how she attended the famous radical left wing university in NYC?

I'm happy for her. I didn't like the movie. Maybe this will give more Latinas with her features roles written for Latinas. I remember the first time I saw her in the movie Drum Line. She played the role of a Black American at an HBCU. Also she played Nina Simone, which she later said she never should have taken that role.

Or just Dominican which is fine too. Anyone that doubt it, simply read what makes a Dominicanos in the Dominican Constitution:

18th Article. Nationality - Dominicans are: 1) Sons and/or daughters of a Dominican father and/or mother.

That was pretty clear.

The kids of her Dominican grandparents are Dominican, thus Zoe was born to Dominican parents.

Zoe may not be a Dominican citizen if she hasn’t claimned one yet, but the Dominican nationality has been there since the first day she was born.

It also happens that Zoe knows Spanish, in fact she said it’s her mother tongue as it was the language she speak first. However, and this might be a shocker for some, the kids of Dominicans are the only ones that are Dominicans even if they not know a word of Spanish and the only ones that can chain Dominican citizenship without knowing Spanish, without a medical exam, without knowing any part of Dominican history. You apply and you automatically get it. Others may apply, but it isn’t 100% guaranteed they will get it if they don’t know Spanish, have one of the chronic illnesses that disqualify a foreigner from becoming a Dominican, know nothing of Dominican history, etc.

Just by virtue of how Dominican nationality is worded in the constitution, there is no such thing as an American of Dominican origin. Rather they are Dominican-American from the start.

Don't say we didn't warn you.
Oh MY gods. I started to watch it... People bursting into song at every event.. Wow. Just awful...

And that theme that started with a call Zoe got in the bathroom from a person whom I immediately guessed what he did for a "living", but then the twist of what he wanted... Why get a lawyer when another profession would have been far more relevant to the goal the caller wanted? I am only half way through, not sure if I can finish it. I do see why she won for being in this left leaning bizarro world musical fiasco. How could she have lost?

A Dominican parent works of course.. And yes I get the point about how she can claim to be Dominican, Puerto Rican or American, all the above . whatever she wants to be at any given moment. Probably black since the one drop rule probably applies as well.

None of that changes how awful the movie is.

Zoe lived in the DR from 9 years old until about 15 years old. They moved here after her father was killed in a car crash and so moved in with the fathers family here.
Her acceptance speech was very moving and it was just so genuine, pure gratitude.

El Mal is the bad song that won the Oscar, I would guess. Or maybe the other bad song called El Camino.
Both bad.

Kind of felt the same, I could not get past the "singing". I am not sure how the movie became so popular.
