Airport administrator defends Dominican ports

The administrator of the Las Americas Airport criticized the foreign news media’s questioning of the security of Dominican airports. Yaqui Nuñez del Risco said that before making judgments about the reasons for the crash and blaming the Dominican authorities it is necessary to wait for the results of the investigation centered on the information recorded by the 757’s “black box”. He defended Dominican airports saying that in 24 years, a major air crash had not occurred here despite having the most dense airline traffic in the Caribbean and Central America, with the largest number of charter flights using a wide variety of aircraft – over 65 airlines from different countries land in this country. He said that if there were not good conditions for flight safety, U.S., French, Italian, Spanish, Canadian and German airlines would not be flying here with their present intensity. He pointed out that the both the Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo airports have radar systems using the most advanced technology in the world.
