The mayor of the Berlin, Eberhard Diepgen, exonerated the Dominican Republic and its government from responsibility for the Boeing 757 accident in which 189 died, mostly German tourists. “The Dominican Republic and its government have no responsibility” for the accident, said the mayor. “We know that your country and your government did not have any responsibility in this sad happening,” said Mayor Diepgen when visiting the Dominican stand at the ITB Tourism Trade Show held in Berlin last week.
He was talking to the Minister of Tourism, Frank Jorge Elías, who later said that the comments of the Mayor “puts behind us the malicious doubts created by international press and certain enemies of the country in regard to the responsibility of the Dominican aviation authorities and the nation for the crash.” He says that the statement by the mayor of Berlin officially releases the Dominican Republic from responsibility in the crash.
