Eighty two ambulances, four helicopters and 1,200 medical and auxiliaries are part of a prevention and assistance operation to avoid trouble and tragedies during Holy Week. The campaign, Semana Santa ’96, will be manifest on the highways and beaches during the week before Easter. The Minister of Health, Victor García Santos, made the announcement and said that his Ministry is the coordinator of the operation which involves the Red Cross, the Civil Defense, the Armed Forces, the Fire Brigades, and the National Police, in an effort to prevent accidents and assist the victims of those that may occur. Dr. García Santos said that the budget for the scheme is RD$300,000 and that manned ambulances will be sited along the principal thoroughfares of the country as thousands of Dominicans depart for the beaches and the cooler mountainous areas. In anticipation of the expected massive exodus from the towns and cities, personnel trained to handle emergencies will also be stationed at the traditional holiday areas.
