President Balaguer opened on Saturday, 20 April the new water main for Puerto Plata, built at a cost of more than RD$500 million. The water main was built by more than 25 private companies, under the supervision of the Instituto Nacional de Aguas Potables y Alcantarillados. It will provide water for the population of the city of Puerto Plata for more than 20 years, and to the principal tourism centers in the triangular zone between Maimón and Sosúa.
Puerto Plata has approximately 10,000 hotel rooms. The main is designed to provide water to the resident population of over 114,000 inhabitants and another 200,000 that stay at the tourist centers. A study showed that the average demand of the city of Puerto Plata, including its industries, the Playa Dorada hotel complex and city hotels, is about 436.45 liters per second.
