Gymnasiad set for Santo Domingo

Sports-oriented tourism continues to grow in the Dominican Republic. The IXth American Gymnasiad will be held in the city of Santo Domingo from 9 to 13 October at the Palacio de los Deportes, Volleyball stadium of the Centro Olimpico Juan Pablo Duarte as part of events leading to the Vth Centennial of the city.

Mario Lopez, president of the Federación Internacional de la Gimnasiada Americana, made the announcement last week. He said that athletes from more than 10 regional countries will participate, together with over 40 groups from the D.R.

Athletes will be grouped into adults and masters categories. The competitions will have an emphasis on endurance, and health preservation, and those with handicaps will have a special category.

The President of Honor of the Gimnasiada Americana is Dr. Rafael Subervi Bonillo, mayor of Santo Domingo. The event is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, the Gordo de la Semana television program, the Municipality and the Hotel Plaza Naco which will be the “host hotel”. Blas Perez Jaquez, Rafael Duquela, Rafael Camarena, and Emigdio de Peña Luna are among the organizers.
