Some 433,746 more passengers traveled to the Dominican Republic by air in 1995 than in 1994. In 1995 there were about 4.18 million arrivals and departures, according to a report prepared by the Centro de Información y Comunicación for the Asociación de Líneas Aereas de la R. D. (ALA) just released. Of that total, 1,303,376 were Dominicans, whose travels increased by 19.6 % over those for 1994. Travel by foreigners using Dominican airports was up 8.3%, compared to a 12.5% growth in the previous year.
Punta Cana is the air terminal that has experienced the most growth, with traffic up 16%. It received 7% more flights in 1995 than in 1994. Airlines that began flying regularly to the East Coast airport last year were Martinair, Condor, and Hapag Lloyd from Europe, and Viasa and Ladeco from South America.
Las Americas, the principal air terminal in the country, grew less in 1995 than in 1994. Traffic was up 50%, compared to 56% in 1994. Puerto Plata posted a strong 30% growth. Las Americas received the highest number of scheduled passenger flights, 66.% of the total, while Puerto Plata had the most charters – 49.3%.
