AIDS agreement

Dominican and Cuban health authorities began talks that could lead to the signing of a bilateral agreement for the prevention and treatment of AIDS and other aspects of public health. Minister of Health Altagracia Guzmán traveled to Cuba to participate in a seminar on primary health care sponsored by the World Health Organization. In Cuba she met with Dr. Carlos Dotres, Minister of Health of Cuba. In the Dominican Republic, AIDS mostly affects heterosexuals. A recent United Nations study showed that if the spreading of AIDS is not stopped here, by year 2000 five percent of the Dominican population will either be affected or be carrying the AIDS virus. It is estimated that if more awareness is not created among the population, some 17,000 children could become orphans by year 2000.
