French ambassador Henri Vidal said that the first of five 34,000-kilowatt thermoelectric units purchased from GEC Alsthom, a French company, would be installed this month, and the remaining four would be operational by April, with a total production of 170,000 kilowatts. He explained that the first plant would arrive in December, the second in January, the third at the end of February, and the other two, at the end of April. The Dominican government contracted these plants at a cost of US$70 million as a short term solution to the energy deficit. The first two units will be installed in the Itabo energy park near Santo Domingo, the other three will be installed in San Pedro de Macorís.
