The goverment announced that it is passing to the private sector the collection of monies owed for government housing. Bienes Nacionales is today responsible for collections, but thousands of beneficiaries have gotten by with not paying for their dwellings or are behind in their payments. "We can increase our collection four or five times with this measure", said Joaquín Gerónimo, director of the Instituto Nacional de la Vivienda. He explained that the collections will be passed to the private sector through the Banco Nacional de la Vivienda. He estimated the government has spent over RD$2,500 million in housing since 1986.
