The National Police is cracking down on the "guaguas voladoras" or small busses that zip around the city. The name of the mini-busses (flying busses) comes from the many times rash driving of their chauffeurs. Police spokesman Simón Díaz said that 95 chauffeurs of the "voladoras" were detained, and accused of rash driving. They were principally detained along the Autopista Duarte and the Avenida 27 de Febrero. Furthermore, continuing with the National Police operative to get Dominican drivers back in line with regulations contained in the driver’s law, from Monday to Wednesday, 293 chauffeurs were arrested for violating a red light, another 175 for mounting an excessive number of passengers and 95 for defective lighting of their vehicles. The Police said that since word has gotten around, red light violations are beginning to decline. He said that on Tuesday, only 75 persons were arrested for passing on red. The operation has been in effect for the past three weeks and is commanded by Melido Núñez of the National Police. Persons detained for traffic law violations must spend 24 hours in jail and submit to re-education programs on safe driving. Influences of no kind have been known to lower the penalty.
