Dominican pitcher could be second best paid in U.S.

Pedro Martinez of the Boston Red Sox expects to sign a five year contract for US$10 million a year, or US$50 million. The Boston Globe reported that this would make the Cy Young winner of the National League the second best paid player in the Major Leagues, only behind Greg Maddux, who recently signed a five year contract for US$11 million a year. In the 1996-97 season, Martínez stroke out 300 men, with an average 1.90, lowest since Steve Carlton did so in 1972, (310, 1.97).
