Codetel announced an increase in business telephone rates. The company announced that as of 10 December, its rates will go up between 28-35%. The rate increases single business phone rates from RD$150 per month plus RD$0.15 per minute in addition to the first 100 minutes, to RD$250 with 200 minutes included, with additional minutes costing RD$0.20. Codetel announced a reduction in charges for domestic long distance calls to RD$2.40 per minute. In June of this year, Codetel began a plan to increase domestic phone rates but the latter was rejected by the government. Codetel controls 74% of the international market and 98% of residential lines, 97% of business lines and 65% of the cellular and beeper market.
