Pedro Martínez, who is about to become the best paid player in the history of baseball, revealed other details of his millionaire contract. The six year contract is as follows: US$3 million for signing, $7 million in 1998, $10.5 million in 1999, 11 million in 2000, $12.5 million in 2001, $13.5 million in 2002 and $15 million in 2003. He has an option to play in year 2004 for $17.5 million. If he does not exercise this option, he will be compensated with $2.5 million. The contract also includes a provision for $100,000 for winning another Cy Young award, $250,000 for winning a second Cy Young, $500,000 for winning a third, $750,000, the fourth, $1 million, the fifth, $1.25 million, the sixth and $12.5 million, the seventh. Martínez will also be compensated for placing second or third in the vote for the Cy Young award. Martínez won the Cy Young award for the 1997 season, after ending the year 17.8, 1.90, the lowest in the Major Leagues in 1997, pitching for the Montreal Expos. He struck out 305 players.
