PRSC leaders deny alliance

Dr. Donald Reid Cabral, Jacinto Peynado and Carlos Morales Troncoso, leaders of the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano, in whom former President Joaquin Balaguer has delegated the re-organization of the party, denied the party is negotiating a political alliance with the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana, the government party. Danilo Medina, political strategist of the PLD, had told the press the PLD and the PRSC were holding talks for the signing of an agreement to take joint candidates to the May 1998 congressional and municipal elections. It had been speculated that the PLD would support Jacinto Peynado as mayor of Santo Domingo for the PRSC. Peynado has said he is not interested in the post, as he aspires to run for president in year 2000.
