Mini-businesses located along the Avenida 27 de Febrero received notifications from the Autoridad Metropolitana de Transporte, the new local transport authority, that they must relocate by 6 January. Persons who use the sidewalks for the exhibition of their merchandise, parking or sale of food products are being ordered out. The move is coordinated by Colonel Pedro de Jesús Candelier, a military officer who became famous for his crusade against pollution caused by large industries. The Avenida 27 de Febrero is slated to become the principal thoroughfare for public transport early next year.
