The Partido Reformista Social Cristiano is announcing open primaries. This means that persons not members of the PRSC can vote. In fact, the only requirement for a person to vote is to have a voter’s card. This decision follows the large absenteeism of the previously held primaries of rival party Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), where only 30% of eligible voters cast their vote. The PRD vote was divided almost equally among three candidates, with each receiving some 30,000 votes. The PRSC primaries will take place 10 January to 1 February 1998.
